Native plant landscaping and permaculture design in the Front Range of Colorado
Crevice Gardens
Crevice gardens are natural art pieces, made to look like ancient stone weathered through time. Also called “rock gardens,” they provide homes for evocative beauty, overwintering pollinators, and special plants. Check out these photos of some RLD crevice gardens!
We love building them…
…and watching them grow!
When cracks between rocks are tight, they’re called “crevice gardens” instead of rock gardens.
They can be made of all sorts of materials, including mountain granite / rip rap,
mossy slab rocks,
or any kind of random rock, including mismatched rocks or chunks of concrete! We built this one out of lava rock to look like a volcano.
They can add great beauty, magic, and natural drama to landscapes.
The slabby style, built with wall/veneer rocks, is an art form that started in the Czech Republic.
But any pieces of rock or hardscape can be made into a rock garden or crevice garden.
We take inspiration from natural crevice gardens, like this one Eryn found at 12,000ft.
After the crevice garden or rock garden is built, we fill it with native plants that don’t need supplemental irrigation. They loving having their roots shaded by the rocks while their tops drink in the sunlight.
These gardens provide habitat for awesome local bugs and birds, as well as bringing beauty and architecture to the space. If you were a bug looking for a cozy cave with sunny views, wouldn’t you want to live here?
